BEETHOVEN’S VIOLIN CONCERTO, MESSIAEN & RAVEL

We move with Messiaen from earthbound glories to the mysteries of the sky above, as seen from the red rock cathedrals of Southern Utah. Ravel’s breathtaking ballet score Daphnis et Chloé was considered by Stravinsky to be not only his finest work, “but also one of the most beautiful products of all French music.” It might be common today, but Beethoven’s daring and “unplayable” concerto was written about 50 years too early for the violinists of his time. Beethoven’s masterpiece might have languished even longer if not for the efforts of a 14-year-old virtuoso named Joseph Joachim, who performed it in 1844 under the baton of Felix Mendelssohn.
